Nursing schedules are where time math gets genuinely hard: shifts cross midnight, breaks get split, and payroll still wants decimals. TCalc treats each shift as an expression - type it once and the answer is exact.

Take a roster line that reads 18:45 to 07:15 with a 45-minute unpaid break. Subtracting the two times directly gives nonsense, because the finish is on the next day. Split the span at midnight instead, or add the shift length to the start - both give the same answer, and the whole shift is four lines:

In the calculator above this is one expression per line, typed the way the roster reads. The pattern is the same for any night: 19:00 to 07:30 with a 30-minute break is 5h + 7h 30m - 30m, which is 12 hours paid.
Nursing documentation runs on the 24-hour clock because 12 AM and 12 PM are the two most swapped labels in English, and on a med chart that swap is a twelve-hour error. Midnight is 0000, noon is 1200, and an entry of 1830 reads as 6:30 PM: subtract 12 from any hour of 13 or more, and below 1300 the number is the one you already use. Timesheet software wants 11.75, not 11:45, and the two look close enough that the wrong one survives review. The rule is minutes divided by 60: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.50, 45 minutes is 0.75. For every other value there is a minutes to decimal hours chart covering all 60 minutes, with the tenth-hour and quarter-hour rounding columns payroll systems actually use.

Shift nursing does not divide neatly into weeks. A twelve-and-a-half-hour shift with an unpaid thirty-minute break contributes twelve paid hours, and three of them make thirty-six - short of a full-time week - while four make forty-eight, over it. That is why nursing rosters average hours across a reference period rather than balancing every week, and why staff routinely need to know where they stand mid-period rather than at the end.
Handover adds a second wrinkle. If the roster says 07:00 to 19:30 but handover starts at 06:45, the worked figure and the rostered figure differ by fifteen minutes a shift. Across a month that is a real number, and it is only visible if someone adds it up.

A night shift running 19:30 to 08:00 cannot be subtracted directly, because the finish is on the following day. Adding the shift length to the start gives both the finish time and the correct calendar day, which matters when the next question is whether the rest period before the following shift is long enough.
Enhancement is usually paid on the hours that fall inside a defined night window rather than on the whole shift, so the useful figure is the overlap between the shift and that window - not the shift length. Working that out per shift is tedious by hand and trivial as a subtraction.

Regular observations and medication rounds are interval arithmetic against a clock, and they are the calculations most likely to be done under interruption. Adding a six- or eight-hourly interval to the last administration time gives the next due time directly, including when it crosses midnight.
The reverse check - how long since the last dose - is the one that matters before giving anything early. Both are single subtractions, and doing them explicitly rather than approximately is the point.

Most hospital shifts run 8 or 12 hours, and the rostered span is longer than the paid figure because the break is unpaid. A common long day is 12.5 hours on the roster, pays 12 after a 30-minute break, and three of them make a 36-hour week.
Add the shift length to the start: 22:00 + 8h shows 6:00 AM the next day. Or split at midnight and add the parts: a 22:00-06:00 shift is 2h + 6h = 8h.
