Converting Between Time Units

The Time Unit Hierarchy

Every time conversion flows through a fixed chain. Knowing the relationship between each adjacent pair is all you need:

60 seconds = 1 minute 60 minutes = 1 hour 24 hours = 1 day 7 days = 1 week ~30.44 days = 1 month (average) ~365.25 days = 1 year (average)

To convert between any two units, multiply or divide by the values between them.

Seconds ↔ Minutes

Seconds → Minutes

Minutes = Seconds ÷ 60 Example: 150 seconds ÷ 60 = 2.5 minutes (= 2 min 30 sec)

Minutes → Seconds

Seconds = Minutes × 60 Example: 4.5 minutes × 60 = 270 seconds

Minutes ↔ Hours

Minutes → Hours (decimal)

Hours = Minutes ÷ 60 Example: 90 minutes ÷ 60 = 1.5 hours

Hours → Minutes

Minutes = Hours × 60 Example: 2.25 hours × 60 = 135 minutes

Note: decimal hours (1.5h) and time notation (1h 30m) are not the same number — don't confuse them when doing further arithmetic.

Hours ↔ Days

Days = Hours ÷ 24 Hours = Days × 24 Example: 36 hours ÷ 24 = 1.5 days Example: 2.5 days × 24 = 60 hours

For working days use your standard working hours per day (typically 7.5 or 8):

Working days = Hours ÷ 8 Example: 44 hours ÷ 8 = 5.5 working days

Days ↔ Weeks

Weeks = Days ÷ 7 Days = Weeks × 7 Example: 21 days ÷ 7 = 3 weeks Example: 2.5 weeks × 7 = 17.5 days

Days ↔ Months and Years

Months and years don't have fixed day counts, so conversions are approximations unless you're counting specific calendar months.

Approx. months = Days ÷ 30.44 Approx. years = Days ÷ 365.25 Example: 180 days ÷ 30.44 ≈ 5.91 months Example: 730 days ÷ 365.25 ≈ 2.0 years
